ANGELIQUE HOUTKAMP

Angelique Houtkamp lives and works in Amsterdam. Born in 1968 in a small town close to the big city where she moved at the age of 19. She has been a tattoo artist for 12 years, which quickly sidelined her to be a self-taught painter in watercolor and ink. Since 2002 her work has been sold and displayed in numerous international galleries. She has designed for a Dutch shoe label, collaborated with Nookart, Italian fashion brand Fornarina and just started an assignment for surf/snowboard brand Billabong.

Her work is deceptively simple, instantly recognisable and often humorous. Classic old school tattoo imagery is mixed with mythological dreams, antropomorphed critters, nautical iconography and haunting Hollywood romance, by way of Angelique`s distinctive painterly magic and eye for style.

Her nostalgic, eclectic and beautifully rendered artistic wonderland has been published in her two massively well-received books; Tattoo Darling and Tattoo Mystique.
Her work is obviously inspired by old school tattoo imagery, but the observant eye will also detect influences such as early last century illustration, Weimar period art in general, photographers like Brassai, who portrayed the seedy Paris nightlife of the 1930`s and Russian born fashion designer/illustrator Erté.
